Mac OS Upgrade

Those of you who care about such things might have heard that Apple recently released a new version of it’s desktop OS, 10.7, code-named Lion. It was inevitable that I would upgrade my current system (a mid-2009 model MacBook Pro) eventually, but I wanted to put it off for a while. I’ve talked before about …

“Why Multi-word Phrases Make for More Secure Passwords Than Incomprehensible Gibberish”

I was rather surprised at this assertion, at first. Then I thought about it… there are only about 95 printable characters in the basic seven-bit ASCII character set. A very conservative estimate puts the number of distinct English words at well over 65,000, most of which are many letters long. If you knew that someone’s …

Scammers, Part III

This is getting ridiculous… in the last three days I’ve gotten two more of those computer scam calls. One woman, one man. Both with strong India accents, but both far more understandable than the first two. Far more annoying too. The novelty has worn off, people, go screw with someone else. For the first one …

“What Kind of Maintenance Do I Need to Do On My Linux PC?”

As promised in yesterday’s post, this article includes a section on backups in Linux. It also has a lot of other useful stuff for Linux-users, especially newer ones, and some of the information there might just tempt Windows users (at least) to want to take Linux for a run. 🙂

“How to Back Up Your Computer”

I expect most of my readers already have at least a minimal backup system in place (you do, don’t you?), but for anyone else who stumbles onto this blog, here’s a good primer for Windows and Mac systems. (People running Linux, have patience, it’s coming. EDIT, 2011-07-03: it’s here.) Believe me, if you don’t have …

Scammers Ahoy, Redux

Remember that scammer I reported playing with a few months ago? Well, apparently one of his many brothers-in-crime didn’t get the memo about me. I picked up the phone earlier this month and found myself talking to another very-heavily-accented man, who again tried to tell me that my computer was infected. I briefly considered playing …

“Consumers urged to step up wireless security”

I’m not really sure what these guys are trying to accomplish. Those of us who want wireless network security already use it. Those who don’t use it generally either don’t care or truly don’t want it. There are a pair of high-rise apartment buildings across the street from one of the stores that my wife …

“Lock Down Your Computer Like the NSA”

Feeling particularly paranoid today? Have the time and inclination to read several hundred pages of information and instructions on locking down your computer systems? Well, you’re in luck. 😉 Apparently the NSA doesn’t like Ubuntu. They provide instructions for locking down Red Hat, but no other Linux distribution.
