“Fascist America, in 10 easy steps”

I don’t intend to get into politics very often on this blog, but sometimes it’s necessary.

An article in a UK newspaper sums up what a lot of people have been warning us about since September of 2001. It’s an alarming look at how the Bush administration is undermining all of the checks and balances that keep the American people free. It’s worth reading.

If you’re not American, you may think it doesn’t apply to you. But think about what the American military could do under someone unrestrained by laws and bent on eradicating anything that conflicts with his own narrow morality. Think what it has already done, just in the last six years.

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. Pastor Martin Niemöller

UPDATE: The recently-published book by Lee Iacocca talks about this too. I haven’t read it yet, only excerpts and summaries, but it sounds very interesting.
