Besides, in the original comic, his abilities weren’t all that unexplainable.

Read the article I mentioned (or rather, the original one that it cites), and you’ll see that this is a different take on it.
In the original comic, as I understand it, he didn’t have most of his current abilities. He couldn’t fly, for instance, only jump huge distances.
