I’d say it’s an interesting statistic, but definitely not “proof”. Correlation doesn’t prove causation, and there’s probably just as good a chance that the other airlines are run better, have less pension obligations, have smaller, newer, more efficient fleets, etc..

You’re right, correlation doesn’t always mean causation, but in this case I suspect there’s a close relationship between them. People generally don’t like airlines anyway, even before the ridiculous and demeaning “security theater” stuff that was implemented after 9/11; they put up with them because they’re faster than any other form of transportation, so the irritants and discomforts don’t have to be tolerated for very long. But every time an airline tries something that irritates its customers even more, the customers reassess their decision to fly with it, and a certain percentage will choose not to. I think that’s what is showing up here.
