There are over ten thousand "detectable" orbiting objects (i.e. objects four inches or larger) that are already being monitored -- "dead satellites, spent rocket stages, a camera, a hand tool, and junkyards of whirling debris left over from chance explosions and destructive tests." I suspect they'll soon have to do something about them.

As the scientotechnological level of society advances, we will soon be capable of monitoring all near-Earth objects and possibly confronting them, either by disintegrating them or by deorbiting them.
