Well, they are, they could be blocking sites with "gay" or simply replacing it with a blank. Ordinarily though, you're right, the modus operendi is to pretend reality doesn't exist.

That would defeat the purpose. In order to teach someone that something is wrong, you have to admit that that something exists, and these people don't want to do that.

But people like that aren't simply trying to avoid seeing such things themselves, they're trying to stop anyone from seeing them. After all, seeing the word "gay" might make children think that it's okay, and that would be horrible.

People that are that upset about seeing the word "gay" on their computer really should walk over to their DSL or cable modem, and unplug it. While they're at it, don't go outside, because they'll see much worse things just walking down the street sometimes. Really, I can understand censoring the internet on a personal basis, especially to protect children, but this sort of thing is bizarre, and not the only case of dumb internet censorship I've read about. (I recall a filter that didn't allow the word "breasts", with predictable results, including the filtering of important health information sites in schools and the like that used it.)

Apparently that organization doesn't like the word "gay," and decided to abolish it on their site. Since it had a completely different meaning until about the 1920s, that makes for some interesting alternate stories on their site.

GoddessJ wondered how that would affect the last line of the Flintstones theme song...

When you're with the Flintstones
you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a homosexual old time.

Not exactly lyrical anymore, not to mention that it changes the meaning somewhat... ;-)

Truly bizarre. Why does it need to substitute "homosexual" for "gay"? It's like substituting "negro" for "black"... I believe (let's not debate it, please) that homosexuality is wrong, though I don't hate homosexuals, in fact I have some members of my family who are, but this is just a ridiculous form of censorship.
