“Microsoft battles Vista perception issues with $15,000 prize”

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

This quote pretty much covers it:

In what can only be described as an act of utter desperation to overcome Vista’s mostly negative public perception issues, Microsoft Australia has put together an online “Fact or Fiction” quiz all about Windows Vista.

Un-frickin’-believable. Squared.

Cracking a Lost Wireless Network Password

Friday, February 15th, 2008

GoddessJ’s sister (”D”) just had a minor surgery yesterday, and the doctors recommended that she not be left alone. Her husband couldn’t stay with her today, so we and GoddessJ’s parents decided to take it in shifts. It’s not a major inconvenience for any of us; her parents are retired, GoddessJ isn’t working at the moment, and I can work anywhere so long as I have my laptop and Internet access.

It’s that last bit that poses the problem. They have a wireless network, and they gave me permission to use it the last time we were there, but they didn’t know the network password — her husband had set it up, and couldn’t remember what he had set it to, other than “something to do with hockey.” So before we left, I studied the problem carefully.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

And here’s a Valentine’s Day card that you can print out and give to your Significant Other… but I’d recommend reading it first. ;-)

Fowarded E-Mails

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

One of my sisters sent me a very interesting optical-illusion e-mail recently. I enjoyed it quite a bit. But like most such messages that I see, it was forwarded, and had several different headers, and all of the e-mail addresses it had ever been sent to were intact and visible in them.

People… please, please, please don’t make it easier for spammers to get the e-mail addresses of your friends and family. If you really must forward a message, or send out a mass e-mail of your own, do it the smart way: use the BCC field instead of the TO or CC fields, and strip off any previous forwarding headers before you send it.

“How we know who’s really won the format war: The Blu-ray makeup line”

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

It seems that HD DVD really has lost the format war:

Cargo Cosmetics has launched a new line called Blu_ray, designed for makeup artists who need to adapt to high-definition cameras.

If the cosmetics industry says it, it has to be true. ;-)

“New Mexico’s video game nanny tax”

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Lovely. At least it’s not likely to stick around long, even if it does pass.

“Scottish government drafts Cat Welfare Code”

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Nice to see that it’s not just the US government that puts taxpayer dollars to good use.

“HP signs up Sony Pictures for made-on-demand DVDs”

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

People have been predicting something like this for a long time, though I frankly expected the book-publishing industry to jump on it first… it’s hard to find out-of-print books (though not as hard as it once was, thanks to Amazon).

“Thais rate rat ‘better than chicken’”

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Well, there is a ready supply, at any rate.

I wonder if Thais would try other meats… I’d love to know how certain politicians stack up against rat… ;-)

“The Nerd Handbook”

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

The Nerd Handbook was written by a nerd, for people who love (or just have to deal with) nerds. It’s disconcertingly accurate in places, even for people who are only mostly nerd-like nowadays (i.e. me). I’m torn between recommending that everyone who deals with nerds read it, and worrying that GoddessJ will think that it describes me perfectly even now.
