Latest Inadvertently Amusing Spam Roundup

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

Spam has become enough of a topic here that I’ve given it it’s own category, and reclassified a number of earlier entries on the subject.

I also wanted to mention the blog-comment spam problem again. Oddly enough, out of over two hundred such attempts, every blog-comment spam that I’ve had here has been on one of two entries. I got tired of it, so I decided to try turning off comments on those two entries. It’s amazing… I haven’t had a single comment-spam attempt in the last several days!

Now back to our regularly scheduled spam update, already in progress.

“Computing the Volume of a Cat”

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Although the sound volume of our three part-Siamese cats is generally set to “annoying,” this article gives a possibly-useful, and definitely-interesting, method of approximating the true physical volume. And it’s something that the cat will cooperate with. :-)

(Be sure to check out the “rat-like creature” link, purely for the hilarious pictures.)

“Best. Movie. Tie-In. Ever.”

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

From our friend Interrobang, a hilarious mention of the Transformers movie. I chuckled for several minutes when I first saw it today.

“Father takes toddler to burglary”

It’s so nice to see that fathers are doing more things with their children these days.

Fun, and How To Have It

Monday, August 6th, 2007

I’ve always felt a certain kinship to the character of Sherlock Holmes. Not for his ability to notice the most minute of details, or his reasoning skills, or his undeniable flair for disguise… admirable as those and many of his other traits may be, it’s his moods between cases that I’ve always identified with.

A True Monster Truck

If you’re a fan of really big trucks, check out this one.

Ahhh!

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

The air conditioning fellow arrived about 45 minutes ago and spent maybe fifteen minutes isolating and fixing the problem (a blown capacitor). We’re finally starting to cool down now. I may be able to move back to the office in a couple hours. :-)

Murphy’s Law

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

The temperature is hovering around ninety this week, and it’s bright and sunny, so of course the air conditioning in our building decides to croak yesterday afternoon. And of course the repair place can’t get out here to look at it until tomorrow at the earliest. Our office is on the upper floor, which reached intolerable at about 9:15 this morning and is still rising.

It’s at times like this that I really bless the current state of computer technology. My main computer is a laptop, portable by definition, so it’s easily possible to move it (and myself) to a lower and cooler floor for the duration. And reliable wireless networking technology means that I’ve got full access to our phone system, our network, and the Internet, anywhere in the building. So this becomes a minor inconvenience, rather than a choice between lost productivity and an invitation to heatstroke. :-)

“Science of speed reading”

Fascinating piece on how reading is actually done.
